Benefits of Holistic Therapy
Mental health conditions, such as depression, PTSD, and anxiety are often treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Holistic therapies are complementary, natural treatments that lower stress and increase the effectiveness of traditional protocols.
Types of Holistic Therapies
Experience Structured Living residential program delivers functional medicine at our San Diego treatment center. This includes a myriad of alternative and holistic health services.Â
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been a part of Eastern medicine for thousands of years. Today, acupuncture specialists use the therapy to relieve stress and anxiety. During an acupuncture session, the therapist inserts thin, hairlike needles into specific points on the body. This breaks up energy blockages, releases endorphins, and boosts well-being.
Chiropractic Care
Although chiropractic care is associated with physical pain and injuries, it is also a proven treatment for mental health disorders. Other elements of chiropractic care, including massage, stretching, and adjustments can reduce anxiety symptoms such as high blood pressure, muscle tightness, and tension headaches.Â
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy leverages the link between the sense of smell, memory, and emotions to promote healing and well-being. Some natural scents activate brain regions associated with a positive mood, concentration, and alertness. Aromatherapy can also be used to induce relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality.
Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation have a profound impact on the brain and mood. Both therapies focus on deep breathing, which activates the sympathetic nervous system, the counterweight to the fight-or-flight response. When the sympathetic nervous system is engaged, stress hormones like cortisol decline. Yoga and meditation also encourage present-focused thinking, which reduces harmful thought patterns, such as rumination and negative self-talk.Â
Reiki
Reiki is a form of energy healing that uses touch, music, and other pleasant sensations to lower stress. Reiki is a complementary treatment for depression, anxiety, stress-related conditions, and PTSD.
How to Choose the Right Holistic Therapy
Holistic therapies are generally noninvasive and safe for most people. However, every individual will respond to these treatments differently. For this reason, it is best to consult with a mental health professional before beginning any holistic treatments. Â
